Marriage

God institutes marriage immediately after the creation of man when He notes "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him" (Genesis 2:18).  After making woman, God joins man and woman in the first marriage, a blessed institution between one man and one woman, where two "become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24).  When the Pharisees question Jesus about divorce, Jesus notes the following about marriage "a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife and the two shall become one flesh.  So they are no longer two but one flesh.  What therefore God has joined together let not man separate" (Matthew 19:5-6).  This is an affirmation of the teaching of the Old Testament along with the proclamation that marriage is a gift from God meant to last a life time.

Marriage: Gift and Cross

Marriage is a gift from God.  God gave Adam to Eve and Eve to Adam in marriage in the Garden of Eden.  He continues this same work through the church in this day.  This is part of what Martin Luther notes as He describes the good gifts that God the Father gives which include: "clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have" (Luther's Small Catechism, explanation of the First Article). This is true for husband or wife.

Premarital catechesis and weddings at Grace Lutheran will naturally focus on the gifts and crosses that God provides through His estate of marriage.  The other primary focus is that of forgiveness, starting first by examining the forgiving work of Christ on the cross and then moving to Christ's forgiveness distributed through Word and sacrament, finally ending with Christ's forgiving words spoken from our lips.

Weddings at Grace Lutheran

A wedding service at Grace Lutheran flows forth from the understanding that God is the one who is giving the gift of marriage.  Consequently, the service includes vows derived from the scriptures that focus on what God tells us about marriage-that it is a gift given by Him meant to last a life time.  The hymns and other instrumental music for the service proclaim the work of Christ and point to the future glory that God will give to us.  Finally, the sermon is centered on Christ's work on the cross and how that is distributed in our lives.

Our pastor prepares the service with the couple and he conducts the service with perhaps assistance from other ordained pastors of the Lutheran Church of Canada or her sister bodies throughout the world.

While wedding services at Grace are primarily available to current active members, certain exceptions may be made after our pastor is consulted.  For further information or to speak with the pastor, please call the office at 522-7621.
